SUBJECT Speaker of the Canadian Senate meets the speaker of the ROK National Assembly

On Monday, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Moon Hee-sang received an official visit of the Canadian parliamentary delegation led by Speaker of the Senate of Canada George J. Furey.

 

ROK Speaker Moon Hee-sang thanked Canadian Speaker George J. Furey for visiting Korea on the 55th year since ROK and Canada established diplomatic relations.

 

A day earlier, the parliamentary delegation of Canada visited the UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan in commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. Speaker Furey paid a tribute to the more than 26,000 Canadians who served and sacrificed in the Korean War.

 

Referring to the Canadian delegation’s visit on Sunday, the ROK Speaker said that Canada and South Korea formed blood relations during the Korean War in defending liberal democracy together.

 

Speaker Moon said that Canada is the country with the fourth largest group of overseas Koreans residents. The ROK Speaker then pointed out Senator Yonah Martin, and asked Speaker Furey to pay attention to Korean community in Canada so that they may contribute to politics and the society of Canada. Senator Yonah Martin is the first Canadian of Korean descent to serve in the Canadian Senate.

 

The Canadian Speaker responded that Koreans are as welcoming as they had fifteen years ago in 2003 when Furey last visited Korea, and congratulated Speaker Moon for being elected the Speaker.

 

Speaker Moon stated that Korea and Canada share similar stances on various issues in the international arena, in addition to being major trade partners with FTA. He also emphasized the role of Canada in ensuring peace in the Korean Peninsula.

 

From South Korea, National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang, MP Lee Koon-hyon, MP Jeon Hyun-hee took part in the meeting. The Canadian parliamentary delegation included Ambassador Michael Danagher, Senator Grant Mitchell, Senator Yonah Martin, Senator Sarabjit S. Marwah.
