Members of the Turkish parliament began to take their oaths at the 600-seat legislature in Ankara on Saturday, with the process expected to end on Wednesday.

The new parliament features 295 lawmakers from Erdogan Justice and Development Party (AKP) and 49 from the allied Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

The number of lawmakers has increased by 50 seats in the new Turkish parliament and thus a majority in the legislature now requires 301 votes instead.

Meanwhile, the AK Party on Saturday nominated PM Binali Yildirim whose current office will cease to exist soon, as parliament speaker.

The ruling AKP candidate is the former prime minister whose post was abolished under constitutional changes.

The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) also have candidates who announced their picks for the speaker position.

“According to the internal regulations of the parliament, the election for the parliamentary speaker will take place on July 12,” Naci Bostanci, the AKP’s parliamentary group chairman told reporters.

Once elected, Yildirim will succeed Ismail Kahraman, who served two terms as the parliament speaker.

Yildirim’s premiership is due to conclude when a new government is formed by Erdogan in the coming days.

In the first two rounds of voting for speaker in the Parliament, at least 401 out of 600 deputies’ votes are needed to win.

In the third round of voting, a minimum of 301 votes is needed. If a fourth round is necessary, the candidate with the largest number of vote is elected.
