The Secretariat for Interparliamentary Cooperation of Central and Eastern Europe has been established in the Sejm (lower house), Sejm Speaker Marek Kuchcinski wrote on Twitter on Monday.

The new body has been tasked with the practical and organizational running of cooperation in the region, the statement read.

Director of Sejm Information Centre (CIS) Andrzej Grzegrzolka told PAP the establishment of the Secretariat fulfills the Polish declaration made at last week’s summit of Central and Eastern European Parliamentary heads in Warsaw.

“We are raising the rank of interparliamentary cooperation in the region,” Grzegrzolka argued. “Thanks to the new body, communication, and coordination of joint activities will be further improved,” he emphasized.

According to the CIS director, another opportunity for CEE countries to work out joint initiatives, for example in the field of infrastructure, will be the Europe of the Carpathians forum.

The form is scheduled to take place during the September Economic Forum in Krynica, southern Poland.

Last week, Warsaw hosted the 3rd Summit of Central and Eastern European Parliamentary heads, dubbed #EUROWAW2018.

The participants discussed the strengthening of parliamentary cooperation as an opportunity for regional development, especially in the field of energy and transport policies.

Other topics included the role of parliaments in international politics, sustainable development, regional cooperation and migration policy.

The summit was organized by the speakers of the Sejm (lower house) and Senate (upper house) Marek Kuchcinski and Stanislaw Karczewski.
