On Sunday, Cambodia’s chief government spokesman Sok Eysan confirmed victory of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) in 2018 general elections.

The official results are expected to come out after mid-August, but the CPP won at least 100 out of 125 parliamentary seats in a landslide victory.

Hun Sen has served as the prime minister of Cambodia since 1998 for the past 33 years. As the president of the CPP, the incumbent prime minister now won the country’s sixth National Assembly election based on campaign pledges of continued economic development, peace, and stability.

In comparison to 69.6 percent voter turnout in 2013, the 2018 election showed increased number at 82.89 percent of 8.3 million registered voters.

After the polls closed, the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen thanked the voters in a Facebook message for the election victory as well as the high voter turnout. Hun Sen said that the voters have “truly chosen the path of democracy.”

With the former main opponent Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) dissolved in November 2017 by a court order, the CPP was opposed by 19 other smaller parties.

As a result of an overwhelming victory in the general elections, the CPP will dominate the National Assembly.
