The 8th Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic Speaking Countries (TURKPA) kicked off on Tuesday. The plenary session will take place over two days from November 20 to 21.

In the meeting of the Council of Assembly preceding the plenary session, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey became the new chairmanship, making Turkish Parliament Speaker Binali Yildrim the new TURKPA chairman. Speaker Yildrim expressed gratitude toward the Kyrgyz Parliament for the fruitful work under the Kyrgyz chairmanship of TURKPA.

In addition to the Turkish Speaker, speakers of member parliaments of Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Hungary took part in the meeting.

Speaker Yildrim also took part in a bilateral meeting with Hungarian parliament Speaker Laszlo Kover. Hungary currently holds an observer status to the TURKPA.

On the 21st, the organization celebrated its 10th anniversary of the founding. The conference title dedicated to the celebration is “The first 10 years of TURKPA and Future of Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation: New Approaches.”

The first plenary session of the TURKPA was held in September of 2009 in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. The organization had been established a year earlier in Istanbul in November. The agreement was signed by speakers of parliaments of four countries, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey.

The agenda of the eight plenary session also includes adoption of reports and recommendations from previous meetings of the TURKPA permanent commissions, report of the TURKPA international observers’ mission on presidential elections in Azerbaijan and presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey.

The plenary session will conclude with adoption of the Izmir Declaration.
