On April 17, Tajik Parliament held its first joint session of the National Assembly (Majlisi Milli) and the Representative Assembly (Majlisi Namoyandagon) after the parliamentary election on March 1, from which Rustam Emomali was elected as the new Speaker of the National Assembly. Tajik President Emomali Rahomn also attended the session.
During the session, Odilzoda Dilbar Rahim, Member of the National Assembly proposed to elect Rustam Emomali as the new Speaker of the National Assembly. The proposal was approved unanimously. Then, the newly-elected Speaker, Emomali proposed to elect Ahmadzoda Rajabboy and Yodgor Fayzov as the First Deputy and Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. The session closed with a speech from the President, which covered the importance of legislative role, health issues related to COVID-19, agriculture, efficient use of resources, and execution of laws.
Rustam Emomali, a 32-year-old Speaker, is the son of the President Emomali. He is the Mayor of the capital Dushanbe since 2017 and will continue to occupy the post concurrently as Speaker. The former Speaker Mahmadsaid Ubaydullaev was also the Mayor of Dushanbe from 1996 and became the Speaker of the National Assembly in 2000.
