The 25th UN Climate Change Conference, also known as the 25th Conference of the Parties (COP 25), has started. The event is to be held from December 2 to December 13 of 2019, in Madrid, Spain.

As the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the COP represents all States that are parties to the Convention, thereby assessing the effectiveness of measures taken by Parties. The COP meeting takes place annually, with its presidency rotating among Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe.

This year, the agenda for the meeting includes provisions of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, public registries for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement, international climate finance, capacity-building, gender, and climate change, and National adaptation plans (NAPs). The objectives of the forum were also reiterated during the opening speech of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who said: “We must finally demonstrate that we are serious in our commitment to stop the war against nature – that we have the political will to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. To put a price on carbon is vital if we are to have any chance of limiting global temperature rise and avoiding runaway climate change. Operationalizing Article 6 will help get markets up and running, mobilize the private sector, and ensure that the rules are the same for everyone.”

According to the COP’s provisional list of registered participants, 196 Parties, as well as 1 Observer State, are participating in the forum, with additional 1,232 observer organizations. The UN’s Health Agency, WHO, is also coming to the conference to hold a Climate Change & Health Summit with the global health community on the sidelines of the COP25 conference. Discussions on a wide range of issues are expected to aid the parliamentarians in pursuing lasting solutions to climate change problems.
