The eldest daughter of Kazakhstan’s outgoing long-time leader was appointed Speaker of Parliament on March 20, 2019.

Her appointment came a day after her father, 78-year-old Nursultan Nazarbayev, surprised many by announcing he was resigning after 30 years of office. After his resignation, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Speaker of the upper chamber of Parliament, was officially sworn in as interim president.

The vote to name the 55-year-old Dariga Nazarbayeva, who kept a low profile after she left the government in 2016 as speaker has led many to believe she is going to be a leading contender in the 2020 presidential election.

All 44 senators present voted in Nazarbayeva’s favor, according to Tass news agency.

“I realize very well the role parliament plays in the country’s political and social life, particularly as we are at a turning point in our history…our development strategy and legislative activities are primarily aimed at improving the people’s lives and ensuring the country’s prosperity for the sake of its people,” said Dariga Nazarbayeva after the vote results were announced.
