During the Senate sitting on May 4, Maulen Ashimbayev was elected the new Chairperson of the Kazakh Senate. He will be replacing Dariga Nazarbayeva.

Kazakh President Kassym Jomaart Tokayev participated in the sitting and spoke about the Senate’s political and social role in the country. “First of all, to solve the tasks that confront us, concerted actions by all branches of power are needed. The main task of the Senate is to adopt high-quality laws that open the way to reforms, and ensure stability and order,” said President Tokayev. He also mentioned his appreciation toward the work of Dariga Nazarbayeva as the Senate Speaker. Moreover, he urged the deputies to work through the tough time the country is in, and suggested Maulen Ashimbayev as a candidate of Senate’s new Speaker.

After going through the voting, Maulen Ashimbayev was unanimously elected the Chairperson of the Senate. The 49-year-old politician served as the First Deputy Chairman of the Nur Otan Party, and until recently as the first deputy head of the Presidential Administration.
