Romania’s first female prime minister was sworn in Wednesday as the country’s third head of government in a year.

A former European Parliament lawmaker, Viorica Dancila, 54, and her Cabinet took their oaths of office — administered by President Klaus Iohannis.

Dancila won the approval of the Parliament in a 282-126 vote thanks to the help of some junior opposition groups, with far more than the 233 ballots she needed to lead the country for the next 12 months to come.

The preceding two prime ministers were ousted because they were perceived as being misaligned with the ruling Social Democrat party line, and especially because of their refusal to lend full support to reforming the justice system.

Dancila, a politician with a low profile in domestic politics until this month, spoke before the parliamentary vote about her promise to raise the minimum wage, increase pensions, reduce bureaucracy and build new highways and railway lines by 2020.

Dancila, who will head a Cabinet of 27 ministers, will likely act in the role of an administrator, with government policy decided by powerful Social Democrat chairman Liviu Dragnea.
