Slovenia’s parliament approved Marjan Šarec as prime minister-designate on Friday.
Marjan Šarec, the leader of Lista Marjana Šarca (LMŠ) party, is now set to form a minority government, breaking Slovenia’s longest political stalemate since the June parliamentary election.
According to Slovenia’s national STA agency, 55 deputies supported Šarec while 31 deputies opposed.
Šarec seems to have been backed by the 43 MPs of the five coalition parties, his Marjan Šarec List (LMŠ), the Social Democrats (SocDems), the Modern Centre Party (SMC), the Pensioners’ Party (DeSUS), and the Alenka Bratušek Party (SAB).
Among the coalition, nine MPs are from the Left, two represent the Hungarian and Italian minority, and one MP from the three right-wing opposition parties.The coalition has 43 seats in the 90-seat parliament.
The Left party will not formally participate in the government but agreed to cooperate with the minority collation.
Šarec took the opportunity when the relative winner of Slovenia’s parliamentary election and the leader of anti-immigration SDS party Janez Janša did not gather enough support to become a prime minister and form a new government in July.
Before Šarec entered politics, he gained popularity as a comedian imitating senior Slovenian political figures.
Prior to becoming the prime minister, Šarec served two terms as mayor of Kamnik and ran in the 2017 presidential election.
The 40-year-old Šarec will serve as the country’s youngest prime minister and lead the first minority government of Slovenia.
