After Sweden was left with no party winning majority in the September parliamentary elections, candidate of the Moderate Party Andreas Norlén has been elected as the new speaker.

Norlén was confirmed as the speaker of the Riksdag, the Swedish parliament, with the backing of Sweden Democrats.

Monday’s election took place after a crucial vote in the Swedish parliament in which Prime Minister Stefan Löfven of Social Democratic Party lost a vote on the confidence motion.

Incumbent Prime Minister Löfven will serve as the caretaker prime minister until the new government is formed.

Speaker Norlén has the official task of putting forward a proposal to determine the next prime minister. In doing so, the new speaker will meet the leaders of eight parties of Swedish Parliament to form the next government.

The speaker is expected to approach the party leaders in order of sizes, likely to hold the first meeting with Löfven of the Social Democrats Party, followed by meetings with Ulf Kristersson, the leader of the centre-right Moderates party and the four-party opposition bloc, the Alliance, and with Jimmie Åkesson of the Sweden Democrats Party.

Norlén will also approach the leaders of the Left Party and the Green Party.

While Speaker Norlén has four attempts to propose a new prime minister and get support from MPs, if all attempts fail, a new election must be held within three months period. This, however, has never happened in Sweden’s history.
