Photo: Arabnews. Qatar gets new prime minister
On January 27, 2020, Qatar’s ruling emir appointed Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani as the new Prime Minister as the former Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani submitted his resignation to the emir.
Sheikh Abdullah had been prime minister since 2013, and he was also holding the position of Qatar’s interior minister. The reason for his resignation is not known.
The newly appointed Prime Minister Sheikh Khalid was sworn into the office during a ceremony at the Diwan (the royal court) in downtown Doha early on January 27. Assistant professor at King’s College London and regional expert Andreas Krieg described the new head of government as “one of the most trusted advisors and confidants of the emir.” He will also be succeeding Qatar’s interior minister position.
Sheikh Khalid is a well-trusted confidant of the country’s emir. He served in numerous posts within the royal court since 2006, and he took charge of the emir’s royal court since November 2014. He also worked in the gas industry and spent his years of education in the United States.
He is expected make diplomatic achievements between Qatar and neighboring Arabian Gulf countries, and also guide the nation well into the 2022 Qatar World Cup, which could become the boosting point of economy and international influence.
