Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured another five-year term after winning a landslide general election victory. Results showed his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to win more than 294 of the 543 seats in parliament. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is ahead with 345 seats.

The main opposition alliance United Progressive India (UPA), which is headed by Rahul Gandhi's Congress party, is yet to concede. They are expected to win around a hundred seats, a similar number to the total vote win by non-aligned parties.

A party or coalition needs at least 272 seats to secure a majority in the 543-member lower house of parliament, or Lok Sabha.

"Thank you India! The faith placed in our alliance is humbling and gives us strength to work even harder to fulfill people's aspirations. I salute every BJP Karyakarta for their determination, perseverance and hard work. They went home to home, elaborating on our development agenda," the PM tweeted this evening.

In another tweet, the PM said the country will grow and prosper together. "India wins yet again," he added.

As PM Modi was expected to secure his re-election, two main stock market benchmarks – the Sensex and the NIFTY50 – reached record highs as investors cheered the prospect of the BJP and their pro-corporate policies.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Australia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and other leaders have congratulated Narendra Modi after early vote counts showed that BJP was taking a decisive lead in India’s election.

The vote had been widely viewed as a referendum on the prime minister's Hindu nationalist politics. Over 600 million people voted in a marathon six-week process.
