On November 14, 2019, Chairman Nurlan Nigmatulin of the Mazhilis of Kazakhstan held bilateral talks with Vietnamese Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on his official visit to Vietnam.

At the beginning of the inter-parliamentary dialogue, Chairwoman Ngan expressed her view that Chairman Nigmatulin’s official visit marks a milestone for a traditional friendship with cooperative ties. In turn, Chairman Nigmatulin said: “Vietnam is an important partner of our country in Southeast Asia. The leadership of Kazakhstan has paid and continues to pay special attention to comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam,”

The discussion between parliamentary speakers of Vietnam and Kazakhstan was mainly about trade and investment. The speakers talked about the Vietnam-Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) FTA, which benefited both parties, as bilateral trades grew significantly. Statistics show that the two-way trade volume jumped from $200 million in 2017 to $268 million in 2018, expecting a higher figure in 2019.

The leaders also noted the importance of enhancing trade relations in various ways, especially in sectors that Vietnam has strengths and Kazakhstan has demand for. These sectors, according to the representatives, include light industry, food, and garment-textiles. Chairwoman Ngan also showed Vietnam’s willingness to boost exports of mobile phones, electronic products, and components while importing more ore, minerals, chemicals, and computers from Kazakhstan.

Along with stronger economic ties between Vietnam and Kazakhstan, the two sides emphasized improvements in political and diplomatic relations as well.

On his official visit to Vietnam, Chairman Nigmatulin also met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, after meeting with Chairwoman Ngan.

During the talks, Chairman Nigmatulin stressed that Vietnam and Kazakhstan should cooperate more in the following sectors: agriculture, light industry, transport, logistics, and tourism. In response, PM Phuc suggested opening a new air route between the two countries, as Vietnam’s aviation sector is showing progress. Other topics that were addressed during the discussion include making favorable FTA-based conditions for businesses and improving trade partnership with a railway system that connects Vietnam to Kazakhstan and Europe through China.
