On May 15, the health ministers of Korea, China, and Japan held a Special Video Conference of Tripartite Health Ministers' Meeting (THMM) on COVID-19. Park Neung-hoo, ROK Minister of Health and Welfare, Ma Xiaowei, Chinese Minister of the National Health Commission, and Kato Katsunobu, Japanese Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, participated. Dr. Kasai Takeshi, Regional Director of World Health Organization West Pacific Regional Office (WHO-WPRO) and Secretary-General Michigami Hisashi of the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) also participated in the meeting as observers.
The meeting focused on cooperation for tackling the pandemic and developing a vaccine to quickly overcome the crisis. The ministers shared the current health crisis and related policies, and mentioned about post-COVID-19 quarantine policies for better protection in the future. They agreed that sharing information and data related to successful prevention and control cases of the virus, supporting World Health Organization, and international collaboration to fight against the crisis were necessary.
During the meeting, Park emphasized the need to revise ‘Joint Action Plan for Infectious Disease Response’ in the upcoming 13th THMM, so that the countries could systematically better respond to infectious diseases. He also suggested organizing a collaborative system to support faster development of cures and vaccines and mobilizing necessary workforce, such as scientists and medical personnel across borders without interfering with each country’s quarantine system. Following the special conference, the ministers adopted a joint statement.
