Founded 130 years ago, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is a biannual meeting of parliamentarians who seek to empower parliamentarian diplomacy in order to promote peace, democracy, sustainable development, gender equality, and global governance.
This year, the global organization celebrates its 130th anniversary, along with the 70th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the 40th anniversary of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. As of today, the IPU consists of 179 national Member Parliaments and 12 regional parliamentary bodies, with over 70 Speakers, 40 Deputy Speakers, and over 700 Members of Parliaments from 140 countries participating in the 141st conference.
Following the 140th meeting, which was hosted in Doha, Qatar, in April this year, the 141st meeting has begun. The five-day forum is planning to cover the following: the roles and mechanisms of parliaments in strengthening international law, a parity debate on the theme #NotInMyParliament to end sexist harassment and gender-based violence in parliament, the theme of Future Policy Award 2019 on Youth Empowerment, the role of parliaments in ensuring the right to health, and a discussion on strengthening peace and security against threats and conflicts resulting from climate-related disasters, as well as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
