On June 11-13, the seven members of Group 7(UK, USA, Canada, Japan, Germany, France and Italy, plus the EU) gathered together to discuss some of the most pressing global challenges, from coronavirus to climate change, at Carbis Bay, Cornwall, UK. For this year’s meeting, 4 Guest countries (Australia, India, Republic of Korea, South Africa) and 4 International organizations (UN, IMF, World Bank Group, and OECD) were invited to join the fight against and build back better from the pandemic.

 

Participants of this year’s meeting (including those participated virtually) include Prime Minister Boris Johnson (host), President of the United States of America Joe Biden, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, , Prime Minister of Japan Yoshihide Suga, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, President of France Emmanuel Macron, and Prime Minister of Italy Mario Draghi, as well as President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Council Charles Michel, Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in, and President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa from Guest Countries, and Secretary-General of the UN António Guterres, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, World Bank Group President David Malpass, and Secretary-General of the OECD Mathias Cormann.

 

G7 Cornwall Summit consisted of 6 plenary sessions, which covered Economic Recovery; Global Resilience; Foreign Policy; Health, Open societies; and Climate and Nature (in the order of the agenda). Plenary sessions on Economic Recovery, Global Resilience and Foreign Policy were exclusive to G7 leaders, and the Guests participated in the rest of the sessions.

 

As a result of the meeting, the G7 leaders adopted the Carbis Bay G7 Summit Communiqué. The G7 leaders, united under the principle of free open societies and democracies and commitment to promote multilateralism, agreed to end the pandemic by vaccinating as many people as possible, supporting the economies with proper recovery plans, strengthening global trading system and building a more resilient global economy, promoting green recovery, developing new global partnership for clean and green growth, and harnessing the founding values-democracy, freedom, equality, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.

 

Apart from the G7 communiqué, G7 Carbis Bay Health Declaration, G7 2030 Nature Compact, G7 Open Societies Statement, G7 Research Compact, The Road to COP(Statement by the UK) were released as Summit Outcomes.
