On January 22, 2019, Premier Le Keqiang of China held talks with visiting Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, pledging to forge ahead the friendship and cooperation with Cambodia to a higher level.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of six documents, including on increasing cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative and Cambodia’s southwestern seaport of Sihanoukville.

The Cambodian Prime Minister also met with Li Zhanshu, chairman of China’s National Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, who said China was ready to work with Cambodia to expand pragmatic cooperation, deepen construction related to the Belt and Road Initiative, promote common development, and push forward the bilateral relations to a new level.

Chairman of NPC Standing Committee also called on legislative departments of the two countries to improve communication and cooperation, provide legal protection for implementing consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, and consolidate the foundation of public opinion so that the two sides could carry on the friendship for generations.

After the meeting, Cambodian Prime Minister posted on his Facebook: “The Chinese president said China will continue to import 400,000 tons of Cambodian milled rice and to boost trade to up to $10 billion by 2023. China will also provide about $600 million in grants for Cambodia for the next three years.”

The agreements come as some countries announced their plans to impose economic sanctions on Cambodia for repressing democratic rights.

The European Union imposed tariffs on rice from Cambodia and Myanmar from January 28, 2019 and will be in effect for three years to curb a surge in imports.
