On May 7, the Iraqi parliament approved a new government, headed by the new Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhimi, after months of uncertainty and deadlock in replacing Adel Abdul Mahdi.

After intense negotiation amongst political parties, Iraqi parliament approved the new Prime Minister and his new government. Among 22 Minister-posts, 15 Ministers were appointed, with 7 ministries including Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oil, Trade, Justice, Agriculture, Culture, and Displacement and Migration yet to be filled.

Al Kadhimi is a former journalist and head of Iraqi National Intelligence Service (Inis), who is known to uphold pragmatism in his work. He has already shown his willingness to “provide solutions” to domestic challenges including COVID-19 crisis, unemployment, taking responsibility for the recent protest, etc.

The new formation of the Iraqi government was welcomed by many countries and international organizations, including US and Pakistan, as well as EU, NATO, and United Nations (UNAMI).
