On January 14, 2020, Turkmenistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov had meetings with regional representatives of several units of United Nations in Ashgabat, and came to signing joint working plans for 2020.

Meanwhile, Turkmenistan will be participating in multiple international conventions and other acts this year under Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov’s accession. Such agreements include promoting trade mediation for solving trade disputes, establishing international road systems connecting to European regions, termination of organic pesticides proven toxic, and creating platforms of cultural exchange and international cooperation.

The discussions with UN representatives revolved around multiple agendas such as food and agriculture, trade and development, drugs and crime, and entry of Turkmenistan into WTO. To promote agricultural development and strengthen food security, Meredov had a meeting with Subregional Coordionator for Central Asia of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Viorel Gutu. In a meeting with Regional Coordinator for Central Asia of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Dmitry Godunov, the two sides discussed investments, transport and logistics, and issue of Turkmenistan’s entry into World Trade Organization (WTO). Meredov also met with Regional Representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Ashita Mittal and the Officer-in-Charge of UNESCO Cluster Office in Tehran Cvetan Cvetkovski.

Moreover, he had meetings with UNICEF and United Nations Population Fund (UNPF), as a result signing joint working plans for 2020. Among them were documents created with UNICEF regarding the future generations of Turkmenistan, such as “Qualitative and Inclusive Early Childhood Education,” signed with the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry and “Improved Legislative Framework on the Rights of the Child,” signed with the Turkmen Parliament.

In annual working plans for 2020 signed with UNPF, health and social equality were highlighted through plans of “Improving Youth Access to Reproductive Health Knowledge,” signed with the Turkmen Parliament and the Ministry of Education respectively and “Promoting Strengthening the System and Mechanisms for Promoting Gender Equality,” signed with the Turkmen Parliament and the Turkmen Institute of State, Law and Democracy, respectively.
