Nepal’s newly elected Speaker of the House of Representatives (Lower House), Agni Prasad Sapkota, has assumed office on January 27, 2020. President Bidya Devi Bhandari administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Saptoka at the President's House in Kathmandu. A day before, he was elected by the House unopposed.

Subash Chandra Nembang, the former speaker and deputy parliamentary party leader of the ruling party, proposed Sapkota as a speaker candidate. The position was vacant since October 1, 2019, after Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned from the post, and Sapkota was the sole candidate.

Sapkota is a 62-year-old lawmaker of Nepal Communist Party (NCP), the current ruling party. He was elected to the parliament from Sindhapalchowk-1 in the election held in December 2017. Before becoming a member of the communist party, he taught in a secondary school for 15 years, where he also took the position of headmaster before quitting. He started his political career in 1978 and continuously showed his support for the communist party.

In the House of Representatives, there are 275 members and 174 of them are seats of the ruling Nepal Communist Party. Therefore, there are voices concerning that the newly elected speaker may not be neutral. After being elected, Sapkota told the media that he would devote all his effort to play a neutral and impartial role in the House.
