Wang Qishan, a former Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and member of the Politburo Standing Committee, has been picked as a deputy to the legislature.

The Hunan province people’s congress, the provincial Parliament, announced Monday evening that 118 deputies have been elected to the national parliament.

Among them is Mr Wang, 69, who was named as a delegate to China’s National People’s Congress, scheduled to convene for its annual session in March.

The appointment is largely expected to pave the way for Wang to assume a high-profile government role during President Xi Jinping’s second presidential term.

Wang, who retired from the party’s Politburo Standing Committee in October, was widely recognized as the nation’s most effective agency in executing President Xi’s anti-corruption campaign.

Widely known as the “fireman” in China, Mr Wang is likely to act as an advisor to Mr Xi or as vice president, with a focus on US relations according to the press.

Though the post he was assigned to on Monday allows him to take part in matters of the legislature, it does not signify any particular authority yet.
