At the 34th ASEAN Summit on June 23rd at Bangkok, Thailand, the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, had a working session with his Lao and Cambodian counterparts, Thongloun Sisoulith and Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

 

ASEAN, which stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, is a regional intergovernmental organization that is comprised of ten Southeast Asian countries to promote intergovernmental cooperation. It regularly engages other countries in the Asia-Pacific region and is involved in many international affairs, hosting numerous diplomatic missions throughout the world.

 

At the event, the three Prime Ministers expressed their satisfaction that the three nations have obtained solid socio-economic achievements, living standards of their people have continually been improving, and that all of them are making big efforts to integrate into the world. They also noted with satisfaction that the solidarity among Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos has been growing more strongly, contributing to peace, development and cooperation not only in the region but the whole world.

 

Many agreements were made during this event. The three Prime Ministers agreed to coordinate closely at regional and international forums, and promoting the building of a united and resilient ASEAN that plays the central role. Agreements on strengthening cooperative ties to maintain border security and on promoting trade and border connectivity has also been made.

 

Prime Minister Phuc affirmed that Vietnam will continue assisting both Laos and Cambodia in manpower training and sharing its experience in socio-economic management. In return, Sisoulith and Sen promised to support Vietnam when the country holds the ASEAN Chair in 2020.

On June 21st, Kim Hoe-jeong, the Vice Minister for International Affairs of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, met with Mohammed Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Shehhi, the Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Economy for Economic Affairs to discuss economic, commercial and technical cooperation between South Korea and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

 

The discussion took place during the first follow-up meeting of the 6th Joint UAE-Korea Economic Committee, which was held in Seoul, South Korea in the presence of senior officials from both countries.

 

This particular meeting addressed the implementation of cooperation programs and plans in several priority areas, including infrastructure, industry, renewable energy, commerce and innovation.

 

During the meeting, both sides highlighted their effective joint programs and plans, which immensely helped the reinforcement of their bilateral ties in many key sectors. These join programs were agreed to be implemented by both sides during the last committee meeting that was held in March 2018.

 

In the sixth meeting held last year, the two sides discussed cooperation in energy, infrastructure, responses to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and increases in civilian exchanges.

 

“Both the UAE and South Korea have developed an active model of cooperation, which has served the economic agendas of our governments, pointing out that the committee’s regular meetings will reflect our willingness and mutual desire to advance our relations,” said Al Shehhi.

 

It has been said by a Finance Ministry official that this meeting will serve as a permanent consultation channel for cooperation with the UAE for South Korea.
