The Irqai parliament approved three more ministers in Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi’s cabinet following several months of political disputes. This brought an end to the seven months of failed negotiations and political deadlock in the country.

Najah Al-Shammari was approved as the defense minister, Yassin Al-Yassiri as interior minister and Farouq Amin Othman as justice minister. The election of the education minister was postponed after Sufana al-Hamdani, the candidate, was voted down.

Last October, Adel Abdul Mahdi was voted to be the new Prime Minister but his new government had four cabinet positions unfilled, a move that underlined the country’s deep political division.

The approval of the three ministers came on the eve of a deadline by Shiite cleric Moqtada Al-Sadr, one of the most influential clerics in the country. He has millions of followers, a large armed faction and a parliamentary bloc. Last week, he threatened to withdraw his support for the current government if Mahdi failed to finalize his Cabinet within the next 10 days.

This rushed the Iraqi leaders to provide a list of candidates to fill the vacant ministries.

The vote to fill the three ministerial vacancies is very unlikely to end Iraq’s political turmoil. Abdul Wahid Tuama, an independent analyst, said, “Nothing will be changed after the election of these ministers. The performance of the government will not change and the problems facing the prime minister will not be resolved. The most important thing achieved today is that the pressure submitted by Al-Sadr on Abdul Mahdi and the heads of blocs will ease for a while.”
