On Saturday, June 29th, Mir Rahman Rahmani, an Afghan lawmaker, was elected as the new speaker of the lower house with the majority of the votes, ending month-long disputes.

In competition with Rahmani was Khan Mohammad Wardak, the Member of Parliament from Wardak province, but Rahmani ended up getting elected. While Rahmani received 136 votes, Wardak only received 96 votes. In order to be elected as the new speaker, 123 votes were required.

In the initial voting, Rahmani was against another opponent for the speaker position. Kamal Nasir Osoli, a Member of Parliament from the Khost province, ran for the speaker of the house. Rahmani received 123 votes, with one inked-vote. According to the law, Rahmani had to receive 124 votes to be announced as speaker but it was established by the acting speaker of the lower house that Rahmani had won the position.

Even though Rahmani was accounted to be the speaker of the house, supporters of his rival opposed electing Rahmani, protesting an inked-vote. Due to the dispute lasting almost two months, Osoli refused to recognize Rahmani as the speaker.
