SUBJECT [May 30] IPU hosts the 142nd IPU Assembly online

The 142nd IPU Assembly was held on the fourth week of May (May 24-27) in virtual format. Despite the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the IPU Members agreed to cooperate in the global efforts for peace, sustainable development, gender equality, youth empowerment, democracy and human rights. To prepare for such an unprecedented virtual Assembly, the IPU Executive Committee set up a Working Group composed of representatives of the geopolitical groups, the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians and the Board of the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, which put forward recommendations and new findings from respective group.

 

Under the theme Overcoming the pandemic today and building a better tomorrow: the role of parliaments, the participants agreed that there is a need for a more systematic financial support for peacebuilding and conflict prevention, inclusion of women and gender-based policies, effective risk management and response in local and regional level, participation of various stakeholders including civic society on human security and conflict resolution.

 

Moreover, parliamentarians recognized the need for investment in youth employment and quality education, as well as policy support for green economy through progressive tax system and universal basic income.

 

Regarding human rights issues, parliaments highlighted the need to support COVAX, reminding that COVIC-19 pandemic cannot be over until vast majority of world population is vaccinated. The general consensus was made on fighting against nationalism, misinformation and hatred, and rebuilding trust in government.

 

During this Assembly, two resolutions-Parliamentary strategies to strengthen peace and security against threats and conflicts resulting from climate-related disasters and their consequences and Mainstreaming digitalization and the circular economy to achieve the SDGs, particularly responsible consumption and production- was adopted by consensus.
