Ali Larijani, Speaker of Iran’s Parliament Majlis and Speaker of Russia’s State Duma, the lower house of parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin met in a bilateral meeting held on Thursday.
In the meeting, Iranian Speaker Ali Larijani expressed hopes that the final decision on the events taking place in Syria’s Idlib will be made by Mr. Putin and his counterparts during the trilateral summit in Tehran on September 7.
Idlib province is one of Syria’s de-escalation zones and remains a stronghold of the Syrian insurgency. In the recent days, the situation in Idlib has escalated as Moscow and Damascus suggested that the militants are planning to launch a chemical attack against civilians to frame the Syrian government.
Along with Russia and Turkey, Iran is a guarantor of the ceasefire agreement in Syria.
The Majlis Speaker added “Today, the global community has recognized that Iran and Russia had accomplished a lot in the fight against terrorism,” and that as Iran and Russia are talking to each other, terrorism may finally come to an end in Syria.
According to Speaker Larijani, cooperation between Russia and Iran in recent years “has had a substantial impact on the developments in the region”.
Iranian Speaker also thanked Russia for their efforts to reach agreements on the nuclear deal.
