From December 13 to December 18, 2019, the 12th plenary session of Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) was held in Antalya, Turkey.

 

Participants of the meeting included parliamentary delegations from Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Cyprus, Iran, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Laos, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Turkey and Yemen, as well as one Observer State (Majlis Shura of Oman) and four Observer Organizations (IPU, AIPU, PUIC, PABSEC).

 

This year’s theme was “The Role of Multilateral Cooperation Among Asian Parliaments.” Various issues were discussed in four different Standing Committees, in parallel with the Plenary Session.

 

Each Standing Committee Meeting began with the adoption of the agenda, which was followed by election of bureau for chairperson. Each session ended with parliamentarians’ discussions of draft resolutions.

 

Standing Committee on Social and Cultural Affairs was chaired by Senator Chhit Kim Yeat of Cambodia and MP Rahimi Jahani Abadi of Iran.

 

Specifically, Standing Committee on Social and Cultural Affairs discussed protection of cultural heritage in Asia, Asian integration through technology, fight against corruption and illegal drug trafficking in Asia, and humanitarian assistance to regions in Asia and the Middle East.

 

Standing Committee on Economic and Sustainable Development was chaired by Mr. Alexey Lyaschenko, who is a MP of Russian Federation Duma and an APA Vice-President for 2019.

 

In detail, the Committee reviewed and adopted resolutions, covering such important topics such as establishing Asian Energy Market, economic growth, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

For Standing Committee on Political Affairs, MP Hajar Chenarani of Iran, who is also an APA Vice President for 2019, presided. Discussion topics ranged from good parliamentary practices to efforts for building prosperity in Asia, which included enhancing parliamentary cooperation for promotion of multilateralism.

 

Lastly, Standing Committee on Budget and Planning discussed APA Budget Planning.

 

Along with the Executive Council Meeting and Meetings of Standing Committees, the election of the Bureau, reconfirmation of the next APA President for 2021 took place during the conference. Also, Shura Council of Qatar and National Parliament of East Timor were granted the full membership status of APA.
