To tackle the accelerating COVID-19 crisis, the Group of 20 (G20) has gathered together via video conference on March 26, 2020. The conference was chaired by King Salman of Saudi Arabia. He opened the meeting by appealing to the world’s most powerful nations for support in research and development of a vaccine for the virus.

The conference was attended by G20 member nations, invited nations such as Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and Jordan, and global organizations like WHO, UN, World Bank, and IMF. During the conference, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres claimed “We are at war with a virus – and not winning it,” and urged the world leaders to adopt a war-time plan in response to the critical pandemic.

During the meeting, nations shared their current situation, noting the severity of the virus and its negative impacts to both domestic and international spheres. There were also highlights on nations that have successfully curbed the spread of the virus. For example, ROK’s President Moon Jae-in described the nation’s effort to provide as many checkups as possible and constant updates on the map of COVID-19 carriers’ movements to the citizens.

In the G20 Leaders’ Statement on COVID-19, the Group of 20 nations agreed that collective action in the current situation is vital, and decided to inject more than $5 trillion into the global economy to counteract social, economic, and financial impacts caused by the pandemic. The importance of global action, solidarity, and international cooperation was well reflected throughout the statement.
