On December 20th, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Moon Hee-sang met the speaker of the Senate and the speaker of the House of Representatives. The speakers exchanged views on how to promote cooperative relations between the ROK and Jordan during the meetings.
ROK Speaker Moon Hee-sang first met Speaker of the Senate Faisal A El-fayez. Moon said that he is pleased to visit the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, indicating that a mutual relationship is building between the two parliaments by referring to Speaker A El-fayez’s visit to Korea last August.
Welcoming the ROK delegation, Speaker A El-fayez said that “the bilateral relations between Jordan and ROK has been developing based on mutual respect, serving the interest of both countries.” The Jordanese speaker remarked that “King Abdullah II of Jordan also wishes to elevate the bilateral relations through cooperation in fields such as politics and economy.”
In the following meeting with Speaker of the House of Representatives Atef Tarawneh, the ROK speaker said that Jordan, as a country with geographical advantages and business-friendly policies, is Korean businesses’ key state in the Levant, a geographical term for East Mediterranean region. Moon anticipated that Korean businesses would further expand the bilateral cooperation and expressed the hope that Korean businesses would have the opportunity to help alleviate water scarcity issue by taking part in the Red Sea and the Dead Sea projects initiated by Jordan.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, in his welcome address, said Speaker Moon’s visit is highly valuable in building economic cooperation. Speaker Tarawneh hoped that Korea would further invest in sectors such as energy and ICT.
Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1962, Korea and Jordan have developed cooperative relations in economy, cultural cooperation, development and humanitarian assistance. Korean corporations have mainly focused on building infrastructure of Jordan including sectors such as thermoelectric power plant, wind turbines. Recently, Korean corporations are waiting to be selected for saline water conversion projects on the Red Sea and the Yellow Sea.
