Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Moon Hee-sang met President of Israel Reuven Rivlin on December 23rd during an official visit to Israel.

Speaker Moon said he is pleased to be the first ROK speaker to officially visit Israel and thanked the Israeli president for welcoming the ROK delegation. “Republic of Korea and Israel share a lot, in history, culture, and the processes of democratization and economic development,” said the speaker. He added “the publication of the autobiography of the former Israeli President Shimon Peres’ indicates that Korean people are interested in Israel.”

Speaker Moon Hee-sang continued that Korea and Israel have complementary relations, with “Korea’s strong manufacturing and industrial technologies, and Israel which possesses cutting-edge technologies for the fourth industrial revolution.” “The two countries can mutually benefit from their cooperation in fields such as futuristic automobile, robots, AI, and IoT,” he said.

In response, President Reuven Rivlin thanked the ROK speaker for visiting the country and recalled his pleasant visit to Korea as the Minister of Communications in 2002. The Israeli president said that “Korea and Israel are both countries of long history and culture, sharing the history of gaining independence in 1948 and striving to establish the government. Both countries have scarce natural resources which makes human resources even more valuable. It is therefore very important for both countries to have the tenacity and faith to overcome future challenges”.

President Rivlin also said that Israel is paying close attention to the efforts to make peace in the Korean Peninsula. “When trust is built, much transformation will follow the two Koreas relationship, as well as the Israel-Palestine issues,” the president said reaffirming his support as the president of Israel.

Speaker Moon agreed with the Israeli president that building trust is crucial in overcoming issues in both regions, and asked President Rivlin to closely watch ROK President Moon Jae-in’s role.
