SUBJECT Azerbaijani National Assembly speaker meets the president of Iran and discuss parliamentary cooperation

On December 26th, the Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation led by Speaker Ogtay Asadov visited the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani.

 

President Hassan Rouhani greeted the speaker of the Milli Mejlis of the Repbulic of Azerbaijan and said that “Iran highly values relationship with the friendly and brotherly country Azerbaijan. The bilateral relations developed even more in the recent years, with Tehran and Baku closely cooperating.”

 

In response, Speaker Asadov mentioned that the presidents of Iran and Azerbaijan have met twelve times in the last five years.

 

President Rouhani said “Azerbaijan shares similar culture, religion and language with Iran”. “Since the independence of Azerbaijan, the relationship between the two countries have expanded to the spheres of industry, pharmacy and technology. Iran and Azerbaijan also share energy resources of the Caspian Sea,” the president added.

 

The Iranian president mentioned the efforts to build the International North-South Transport Corridor are crucial for the two countries’ cooperation. The multi-mode network of ship, rail, and road route will connect the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, Azerbaijan, Russia, and the Black Sea to the Eastern and Northern Europe.

 

The trade turnover between the two countries grew by 40 percent in 2018 and the prospects of future growth remains positive with the North-South Corridor and other initiatives by the two countries’ presidents according to Speaker Asadov.
