As the situation of COVID-19 call for social distance, multiple parliaments are deciding to convene online sessions. The sessions will use video conferencing technology and online voting system to allow parliamentarians to participate from home.

For instance, Speaker Nabih Berri from Lebanese Parliament announced in his statement that the Parliament will hold legislative meetings online on March 25, 2020. The decision is also in line with Lebanese President Michel Aoun’s call for people to stay inside and comply with home quarantine “in order to ward off the threat of the deadly coronavirus epidemic, so that the life cycle will return to normal soon.”

On the same day, Pakistani Parliament also agreed to take the discussion online. Parliamentary leaders were requested to make Skype IDs and make sure they join the meeting through a video link. A joint sitting of the National Assembly and the Senate on constituting a parliamentary committee on COVID-19 and possible impact of COVId-19 on the country’s economy is expected to be held via Skype.

Connected online, parliaments around the globe are seeking social and economic measures to cope with the prevailing pandemic crisis.
