Photo: Akipress. Legislative Chamber of Uzbek Parliament approves Uzbekistan's participation in Eurasian Economic Union as observer
On April 28, the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis (lower chamber) approved its government’s suggestion to participate in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) as an observer.
Since January, Uzbek government and the Cabinet of Ministers have studied the prospects of cooperation with EAEU and suggested the Parliament to consider participating in EAEU as an observing nation. In March, the Parliament established a special Working Group to study the issues of cooperation between Uzbekistan and EAEU, and concluded that the country’s interaction with EAEU will contribute to the growth of foreign trade turnover and strengthen the competitiveness of economic sectors.
During the plenary session, the resolution on the cooperation between Uzbekistan and EAEU was put to a vote. Among 132 attended Members, 86 voted for, 32 opposed, and 14 abstained. Now, the Senate will consider the resolution.
Currently, the Members of EAEU include Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. Moldova has an observer status.
