Jair Bolsonaro of the Social Liberal Party (PSL) won the first round of Brazil’s presidential election with 46 percent of the votes.

In the general elections held on October 7th, Brazilians voted to elect the country’s new president, vice president as well as the National Congress.

The left-wing Workers’ Party (PT) candidate, Fernando Haddad, who formerly served as a mayor of São Paulo and education minister, won 29.3 percent of votes in the first round.

As a result of the 2018 Brazilian General election, Bolsonaro’s Social Liberal Party became the second largest party with 52 seats out of 513 seats. PSL gained significant support from the last election, where the party secured 8 seats.

Still, Haddad’s Workers’ Party will remain the largest party with 56 seats, though PT has four less seats than the previous term.

Analysts believe that the PSL’s rise of popularity reflects Brazilians’ discontent with corruption, crime and economic chaos troubling Brazil particularly in the recent years.

While the former army captain Bolsonaro has been controversial due to his provocative statements, his hard stance against crimes has attracted many supporters.

In the second round of presidential election which will take place on October 28th, Jair Bolsonaro will face Fernanado Haddad.
