Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha formally resigned as the head of the military government on July 15, 2019, saying the country would function as a normal democracy after five years of military rule. Prayuth stays on as prime minister with the baking of pro-military parties in parliament and a military-appointed upper house.
In a televised address to the nation, PM Prayuth said that military rule had brought success in many areas, from fixing the problem of illegal fishing and human trafficking to the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped in a flooded cave in 2018. He said that intervention had been necessary to restore order after six months of street protests and violent clashes broke out in 2014, but that things were getting back to normal after the March 24 election.
“Thailand is now fully a democratic country with a constitutional monarchy, with a parliament whose members are elected. All problems will be addressed normally based on a democratic system with no use of special powers,” he said, referring to sweeping powers the military government wielded. Last week, Prayuth used those powers for one last time to end various restrictions on media. He also transferred civilian legal cases from military to civilian court though he retained the power to let security forces carry out searches and make arrests unchallenged.
King Maha Vajiralongkorn last week endorsed Prayuth’s new civilian cabinet, drawn from a 19-party coalition government that holds a slim majority in parliament. The new government will officially take power after the swearing in ceremony today. It is due to present its policies to parliament next week.
Meanwhile, the Democrat Party has confirmed that its proposed charter amendment has been incorporated into the new government’s manifesto, with Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha reiterating his support to change the laws as necessary.
The manifesto is a collection of the key policies of the coalition parties based on the pledges they made ahead of the March 24 election. The Prime Minister confirmed that he has received a copy of the manifesto and that the contents would be released soon. The final draft will be put up for parliamentary approval on July 25.

Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates’ armed forces Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Speaker of the Federal National Council Dr. Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi received Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament Sultan Al Burkani at Al Bahr Palace on Monday.
The Crown Prince underscored that preserving Yemen’s security and stability and supporting its people were part of the established pillars of the UAE policy since the time of the late founding father, Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and that Yemen is of strategic importance to Arab security. He emphasized that the UAE would continue its efforts until peace prevailed across Yemen and legitimate institutions resumed their duties in an atmosphere of security and stability.
The two sides discussed ways of enhancing bilateral ties, especially in the parliamentary field, and took stock of the latest developments in Yemen. They stressed the importance of strengthening the role of the Yemeni parliament to maintain security and to enable state institutions to provide necessary services to the Yemeni people.
Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament expressed his gratitude to the UAE leadership, the government and the people for supporting Yemen. The UAE has taken a noble stance of supporting the Yemeni people and protecting its Arab identity and history, he added. He also appreciated UAE’s humanitarian and developmental initiatives in Yemen and its support and rehabilitation of the Yemeni security and police forces, which he noted had helped restore security and stability in liberated governorates and enabled the Yemeni people to endure challenges.
Present at the meeting were Shaikh Nahyan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation; Lt. General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior; Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs; and a number of Shaikhs and senior officials.
