Lawmaker Puan Maharani, a member of the largest party in Parliament - Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle – was unanimously elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on October 1, 2019.

During a closed-door meeting in the House Legislation Body on Tuesday, members of Parliament agreed to elect Ms.Puan Maharani, who is expected to serve for the 2019-2024 legislative term.

The politician previously served as Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs in President Joko Widodo’s Cabinet. She is also the daughter of former President and current leader of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Megawati Soekarnoputri, and a granddaughter of President Sukarno, the first President of Indonesia. According to Ms.Puan Maharani herself, she has already resigned from her position for the inauguration, with the President’s permission.

In addition, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, which is also known as PDIP in Indonesian initials, has won the recent general election. Since the 2018 Legislative Institutions Law states that the winning party gets the speakership post, PDIP was granted the entitlement.

The seats for Deputy Speaker are reserved for members of other parties with the greatest number of votes following the PDIP. Qualified parties were Golkar Party, Gerindra Party, NasDem Party and the National Awakening Party (PKB), and they nominated Mr. Aziz Syamsuddin, Mr. Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, Mr. Rachmat Gobel, and Mr. Muhaimin Iskandar, respectively.
