On September 16, 2019, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko met with Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko to share thoughts about the new parliament.

The president expressed his hope to witness a parliament that represents all sectors of the Belarusian society, saying: “The future parliament should be better than the current one. If it is as good or worse, it will indicate a lack of progress. This is why better people should come. When necessary, these people should lead the republic forward.”

The President went on to stress that it is essential for the parliament to speak for a wide range of people in the Belarusian society, which shall include the young and the elderly. According to the President, groups such as trade unions, public organizations, and political parties should nominate their candidates and strive for election victories.

Moreover, the head of state asked the Chairman to take care of members of parliaments (MPs). The President added that their talent and professionalism could help Belarus in the fields of business and governance, further noting that getting 30-35% of the current members re-elected would result in preserving continuity while new members take time for learning.

Along with the talk mentioned above, President Aleksandr Lukashenko opined that it is imperative to endorse women running for the parliament. In response to the view, Chairman Vladimir Andreichenko remarked that Belarus is one of the leading countries in terms of female representation in parliament.

In a month after the talk, registration for candidacy at the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the seventh convocation has begun. It is to be run from 9 to 13 of October.

As the upper chamber of the parliament, the governmental body consists of both elected and appointed members, with 64 members in total. Elections for the Council of the Republic are to be held on November 7, while those for the House of Representatives are arranged for November 17.
