From January 22, 2019, world leaders gathered at the 49th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The meeting was attended by over 60 heads of state or government, 40 international organization heads, and 1700 business leaders.

In the special addresses, world leaders called for rebuilding the global trade system in a multilateral world and the significance of collective action to combat climate change.

Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan said that because China’s interests and future are closely linked to those of the world, China wishes to work with all countries for common development and a shared future for mankind. Wang also emphasized that the international community must take collective action to implement structural reform and adopt efficient policy measures to prevent worsening of income inequality.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated the importance of multilateralism for prosperous development of the world. She said that the slowdown of global economic growth and current forecasts showing declining growth rates led to a number of “disturbances and uncertainties in the multilateral system”, putting the international order under pressure. She called on international institutions to consider the phenomena as a “warning shot” and to implement reforms to reflect the collaborate development of a new global architecture.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that he will use his chairmanship in the Group of 20 (G20) to discuss a new track for looking at data governance under auspices of the WTO to rebuild trust in the global trade system. He also vowed to spearhead discussions on climate and environment-related innovation, and restated Japan’s commitment to the global rule-based system.

Of the MSEAP member countries, heads of state or government and business leaders from 31 nations participated in the 49th annual meeting of WEF in Davos, Switzerland.
