The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), Antonio Pedro Roque, and the Speaker of the Shura Council of Qatar, H.E. Ahmed Bin Abdullah Bin Zaid Al-Mahmoud, met during a high level meeting held in Doha on January 23, 2019.

The two sides reviewed a number of issues of common interest, and explored ways to enhance and bolster relations. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding, reaffirming the role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening relations between nations and in maintaining peace and security in the world.

Under the MoU, both parties will coordinate on important issues related to bilateral ties, take necessary procedures that contribute to unifying the positions of both parties in different meetings, conferences, forums, and international platforms, and exchange expertise between both parties.

The MoU involved creating concrete initiatives to promote peace and security in the region and around the world, as well as properly implementing the goals of the United Nations, especially those related to achievement of sustainable development and reduction of poverty.

The MoU also provided for further discussion on topics and issues found on international parliamentary conference agendas, to coordinate and unify positions on the issues, to exchange information on legislative, legal, and political matters, as well as to increase the number of publications and legislative texts available to both parties.

The Speaker of the Shura Council also met with Secretary General of PAM Sergio Piazzi. PAM currently has 29 parliaments from the Mediterranean participating.
