On October 29, Chairwoman Mammedova of Turkmenistan visited the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly in order to discuss the ROK-Turkmenistan relations with Speaker Moon Hee-sang.

During the discussion, Speaker Moon stated that the ROK President Moon Jae-in’s visit to Turkmenistan in April helped the bilateral relations to advance, citing the ROK-Turkmenistan economic cooperation program as an example. According to Speaker Moon, both countries should make collaborative endeavors to implement the program more effectively. Speaker Moon also talked about his satisfaction with the founding of ROK-Turkmenistan Business Council, which was established on October 24, following the agreement between the two countries’ Presidents.

“I think the two countries have good conditions for achieving win-win situations. I ask for Mejlis’ support to help Korean companies operate business in Turkmenistan without difficulty,” said Speaker Moon.

Other topics mentioned during the talks included the ROK-Central Asia Cooperation Forum and inter-Korean issues. Speaker Moon described the Forum as “a model framework for multilateral cooperation among the ROK and the five Central Asian countries — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan," calling for active participation of Turkmenistan.

When addressing the inter-Korean issue, Speaker Moon showed his appreciation to Chairwoman Mammedova, as Turkmenistan has shown consistent support for the ROK. Moreover, Speaker Moon confirmed the ROK’s stance to achieve a lasting peace regime and a complete denuclearization in the Korean Peninsula through dialogue.

In response, Chairwoman Mammedova said that Turkmenistan has been able to maintain peace by diplomacy, along with the UN’s recognition of the country as a neutral state.

She also noted cooperation between the two countries in education and economy. She then went on to stress the significance of active inter-parliamentary cooperation and exchange in expanding the support in other various sectors.

“In September, a Korean language class was introduced to our middle schools for the first time, and the first King Sejong Institute opened, to teach Turkmen people the language,” said the Chairwoman.

Several MPs from both sides accompanied the two leaders to the meeting.
