The 6th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit, also known as P20, was held in Tokyo, Japan, on November 4. The event was hosted by the National Diet of Japan, in close cooperation with the International Parliamentary Union (IPU).

The meeting was organized in order for parliamentarians to discuss the following topics: promotion of free, open and fair trade and investment; utilization of innovative technology towards a human-centered future society; efforts towards resolution of global challenges and achievement of the SDGs (financing for development and the need for the transparent and effective government).

At the end of the forum, the speakers adopted a joint statement that contains their concerns and objectives.

The discussants began the statement by noting their agenda, which has widened to include crucial areas such as new technologies, digitalization, macroeconomic implications of aging, gender equality, food security, energy, climate change, health, terrorism, migration, and refugee protection.

Then, a few paragraphs were dedicated to recognize current imbalances in global economy, distribution of wealth, trade, and gender issues. The statement called for parliaments to implement global commitments, including SDGs, to national level, as well as to further mobilize for strengthened global partnership.

The statement also reminded the participants of the 2008 global recession, whose further consequences were combatted by resolute joint efforts of the world’s major economies. Next, the communiqué called for parliamentarians’ full engagement to mobilize the political will so that durable solutions for today’s risks can be implemented.

Parliamentarians also agreed to promote science, technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and innovation for peace and human well-being, while underlying the importance of inclusive growth and distribution of technological benefits against potential risks of digitalization, robotization, automation, and digital information security.

The statement reaffirmed the parliamentarians’ strong support for the fight against extremism, xenophobia, and terrorism, as these threats severely damage the order of the global economy, peace, and security.

The parliamentarians finished the statement by showing their determination to improve parliaments’ survey and research capabilities and calling upon IPU for its active participation so that new and emerging issues in the age of international interdependence could be understood in greater depths.
