PHOTO: Yonhap News. Mexico hosts the 5th MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation on November 7.
The 5th MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation was held at the Old Senate House (Antigua Sede del Senado de la República), in Mexico City, Mexico, on November 7, 2019. The conference was attended by the Speakers of the Parliaments of MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey, and Australia).
Since the 1st MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation, which was themed “Parliamentary Leadership for a Global Future,” the MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation has become an important conference that facilitates parliamentary actions. Moreover, it has set forth itself as an exemplary conference, demonstrating the parliamentarians’ implementation of effective measures for the establishment of global norms.
Held under the theme of “The Role of Parliaments in Promoting Social Inclusion,” this year’s conference consisted of five sessions. The first session, titled “enhancing gender equality and women’s empowerment,” was chaired by Mexico. Indonesia presided the second session, in which the participants discussed “creative economy and its contribution to social inclusion.” The third session was chaired by Republic of Korea, whose topic for presentation was “the role of education and new technologies in achieving social inclusion.” Turkey chaired the fourth session, presenting on “sustainable tourism as an engine for growth and social inclusion.” The final session was led by Australia, whose agenda was “the contribution of trade and investment in achieving social inclusion.”
A joint communiqué was adopted at the end of the conference. The communiqué reaffirmed MIKTA parliaments’ commitment to strengthen the role of parliament in various global issues including implementing and enhancing multilateralism, gender parity, and social inclusion.
