On Thursday, November 14, Moldovan Parliament approved its new Prime Minister, Mr. Ion Chicu. Out of 101 deputies, 62 deputies voted in favor of Mr. Chicu. Along with the new Prime Minister, 10 other ministers were approved, with more than half having worked as former advisors for President Igor Dodon.

The previous cabinet led by Ms. Maia Sandu was dissolved after a no-confidence vote on November 12. The next day, President Igor Dodon announced Mr. Chicu as Prime Minister-Candidate.

Prior to the appointment, Mr. Chicu previously served as finance minister for the country from December 2018 to June 2019. During this period, he worked under the leadership of former Prime Minister Pavel Filip, who is currently leading the Democratic Party.

After the voting results were announced, the new Prime Minister said: “The government will continue to fulfill all obligations of the state to external partners and international financial organizations, primarily the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank,”

The newly-appointed cabinet will have its mandate until the next presidential election, which is to take place in the fall of 2020.
