Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi visited Iran and met with his Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani on March 6, 2019.

In a joint conference, the Speaker of Iranian Parliament Ali Larijani and his Iraqi counterpart said they discussed Iran-Iraq economic cooperation, establishing lasting security and support to Palestinians in their meetings. In particular, developing Tehran-Baghdad parliamentary ties and cooperation in international organizations were discussed to establish sustainable security in Iraq in the post-Daesh era. Larijani added that it was fortunate that Iran and Iraq enjoy intimate political, economic, and cultural relations today.

“We are glad that after long tensions caused by terrorist groups in Iraq, nowadays the country is enjoying a good situation”, said Larijani, expressing satisfaction with the defeat of Daesh in late 2017 with the help of Iran. Larijani lauded that this victory showed that Iraqi people are a brave nation with a strong army and touched upon the important role of Iraqi People’s Mobilization Committee and Ayatollah Sistani in defusing terrorist plots against Iraq.

Iraqi Parliamentary Speaker Halbousi said that “Just as Iran had positive stance in fighting terrorism, we will also support Iran against sanctions…Besides, now is the time to pursue the interests of our nations, which requires us to boost our cooperation in the economic sphere and elsewhere”. He condemned sanctions against other nations, particularly the unilateral sanctions imposed on Iran for violating international norms.
