On Wednesday 24th, the Iraqi Parliament approved 14 of 22 new cabinet ministers proposed by new Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi.

After the elections in May, new President of Iraq Barham Saleh gave Abdul Mahdi the task of forming a new government.

Late on Wednesday Adel Abdul was sworn in as the country’s Prime Minster with only partial cabinet as the lawmakers failed to reach a consensus on key postings including the ministries of defense and the interior affairs.

Out of the 329-seat parliament, a total of 220 lawmakers approved 14 ministers chosen by Abdul Mahdi. The confirmed posts include the ministries of foreign affairs, finances, and oil.

Abbas Chadbane will serve the ministry of oil, Iraq’s only source of income. He previously held the post in 2004 and 2005. To the ministry of finance, Fouad Hussain, who has close ties to the autonomous Kurdistan region, has been confirmed.

For the ministry of foreign affairs, Abdul Mahdi proposed former ambassador to the UN Mohammad Ali Al Hakim. Louai Al Khatib, a renowned researcher in the energy sector was proposed for the energy ministry.

The parliament will reconvene on November 6th to decide on the remaining ministries. Eight ministries are yet to be decided.
