SUBJECT [Apr 10] Speaker of Pakistan sends letter to Parliament speakers regarding COVID-19

On April 7, 2020, Asad Qaiser, Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, sent letters to Parliament Speakers of China, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Italy, Iran and Spain regarding the current situation of COVID-19 pandemic.

 

In the letter, he conveyed messages of deep condolences over the loss of lives caused by COVID-19. To the Chairman of the National People’s Congress of China, he expressed gratitude for the country’s support and care towards Pakistani student communities in China and said the effort of the Chinese government to curb the spread of the virus was inspiring.

 

To the Speaker of U.S. House of Representatives, he mentioned the necessity of international cooperation and suggested relief in debt repayments and relaxation of international sanctions on states could be an important first step. To the Speaker of British House of Commons, he expressed his hope for a quick recovery of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

 

To the Speaker of Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Qaiser said Pakistan is looking for ways to curb the spread of the pandemic and work economic development. To the Speaker of Majlis of Iran, he expressed his sincere hope for the Speaker’s recovery from the virus. He also highlighted the decision made by Prime Minister Imran Khan for debt relief and restructuring for the developing countries, as a means to enable them to create the fiscal space needed to save human lives and shore up economies.
