On April 21, Special Committee on COVID-19 of the National Assembly of Korea (Chaired by Kim Jin-pyo) participated in a Video Conference under the theme “Parliament’s Role on International Cooperation to overcome COVID-19.”

 

The conference was attended by Fadli Zon, Chair of Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation of the House of Representatives of Indonesia, and the entire Members of the Committee, Navaratnasamy Paranietharan, Representative of WHO Indonesia Office, Febrian Alphyanto Ruddyard, Director General for Multilateral Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Dato’ Haji Mohd Rashid bin Hasnon, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malaysia, Nguyen Van Giau and Lan Hiew, Chair of Committee on External Relations and Member of the National Assembly of Vietnam. Speaker Puan Maharani from the House of Representatives of Indonesia gave congratulatory remarks and Executive Secretary of UNESCAP Armida Alisjahbana sent remarks by pre-recorded video message.

 

Yesterday’s meeting was chaired by Charles Honoris, Vice Chair of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation. During the Conference, KIM said that Korea’s response against COVID-19 is successful and the situation is stabilizing, with only nine additional infected cases as of the day of the conference. He elaborated that the capacity of Korean medical system to allow massive tests, voluntary participation from citizens with respect for democracy and community, and a swift and transparent disclosure of related information from the government were the main factors behind the success.

 

Moreover, he highlighted the efforts from the National Assembly in accordance with government measures, such as its legislative action to prevent and counter the spread of COVID-19 and passing a supplementary budget bill to secure extra budget. He also mentioned that the Special Committee on COVID-19 was launched to provide selective need “pincette support" on the parliamentary-level. With government’s information at hand, the Committee provided comprehensive and systematic effort, such as adopting a “Resolution to counter the spread and to terminate COVID-19.”

 

Kim further emphasized that a global threat will persist even with effective lockdown measures by some countries, even with effective lockdown measures by some countries, the global threat will persist without complete disappearance of COVID across the world. Therefore, he called for international support and cooperation for prevention of the spread, to minimize the medical gap between countries.

 

The Speakers and parliamentarians considered Korea’s responses as an exemplary case, and ended the conference with hope to end the global outbreak and bring international peace and prosperity as soon as possible.
