Slovakia’s center-right Ordinary People and Independent Personalities party (OLANO) stood high in Slovakia’s general elections held on February 29, 2020. The turnout for this general election was at 63.94%, the highest since 2020.

The final results of the election were released on March 1, with OLANO securing almost 25% of the vote. The party took 53 seats in the 150-seat parliament. SMER-SD won just over 18%, securing 38 seats in total. Sme Rodina (We Are Family) party gained 8.2%, taking 17 seats. People's Party Our Slovakia (LSNS) won 8% of the votes and took 17 seats. Freedom and Solidarity party (SaS) won 6.3% of the votes, or 13 seats, and For the People party received 5.8%, or 12 seats. The threshold of parties through coalition is higher than the 5% for single parties, which is 7%. However, Progressive Slovakia (PS-SPOLU) party couldn’t tip over the threshold.

In order for the Slovak National Council to reach a majority, 76 votes are needed. Therefore, OLANO will have to seek other parties’ support in order to successfully form a new cabinet. The head of OLANO, Igor Matovic, claimed that the party’s main aim is to create new anti-corruption measures, through enhancing public transparency and go through judiciary reform and public procurement.
